The Walters Cultural Arts Center
527 E. Main St., Hillsboro OR

Kicking off the Arts Month festivities on Tuesday, October 5th, a new photography exhibition by the Inner Light Photographic Society will be featured at the Walters. The Look Up! exhibition is in essence about seeing. Historically, photography was considered a trick, or sorcery. However, we have come a long way since the first photograph of 1825. Unlike then, almost everyone today has some type of camera. Selfies, snapshots, and temporary imagery has presented opportunities to see the world through diverse eyes. And even though we can all take photos; it takes a specific act to see what is beyond the lens, capture intention, emotion, and feeling of any given moment. Individual Inner Light members have unique ways of seeing, reflected in diverse imagery and media and a wide range of photographic styles. Focusing on ‘looking up’ rather than focusing down or inward on viewing devices like cell phones, artists have captured unique moments around the world.

Artists welcome the public into their studios – all ages and physical abilities – to let them see where, how, and why they make art. Artists share their artistic spaces, talk about techniques learned over years of practice, and the public gets to meet the makers and purchase artwork directly from the source.

Connections are made that will last a lifetime.

Our extremely popular community art show returns this Friday, March 5th. With Covid, politics, the awakening of attitudes about history, fairness, and equality, 2020 has been exceptionally challenging and a time of reflection. Thus, we chose a provocative two-color combination for 2021: Black and Blue for our fifth annual community color show. Nearly 60 artists will be participating this year, so please come out and support our local art community!
